MINERALS INDEX
Kentrolite |
| Probably 3PbO.2Mn2O3.3SiO2 |
| Orthorhombic |
Forms
b(010), m(110), o(111)
Habit
Kentrolite has been seen on a single specimen in which minute crystals coat a cavity in
calcite together with willemite. These crystals are hardly larger than 0.1 millimeter in
any dimension. They are black and have fairly bright faces which gave measurements
identifying the mineral as kentrolite. The appearance of the crystals is absolutely
reproduced by figure 1 for kentrolite, in Goldschmidt's "Atlas der
Krystallformen", 5 tafel 8. No chemical nor optical tests were practicable because of
the extreme scarcity of the material. The writer is indebted for his specimens to Mr.
Lazard Cahn, who first discovered the presence of these minute crystals under his
binocular.
