Zn3(AsO4)2.8H2O
Monoclinic
Koettigite, a zinc arsenate hydrate mineral, was verified by the writer in 1973. It occurs as flattened sprays, up to many cm in size, of prismatic, lustrous crystals. The color may be blue to grayish blue, white, opaque chalky white, or colorless. Partial analyses indicate Sterling Hill koettigite has but 3.3 wt. % MnO, a trace of FeO, and is otherwise zinc arsenate. No physical or optical measurements have been made. Koettigite and/or parasymplesite are locally replaced by yukonite. It is best verified using X-ray methods.
Koettigite occurred on the 340 level at Sterling Hill, on both fresh and altered fracture surfaces in black-willemite ore which has a high calcite content. Associated minerals include pharmacosiderite, legrandite, ogdensburgite, yukonite, sphalerite, barium-pharmacosiderite, adamite, scorodite, and others. Koettigite has not been reported from Franklin.
