CdCO3
Hexagonal
Otavite, a cadmium carbonate mineral, was reported in The Picking Table (Volume 28, #2, page 3) as a quotation from correspondence from Dr. Sidney Williams. He stated that otavite occurred as a botryoidal white crust along an open fracture cutting massive zincite that hosted scattered grains of franklinite. The crust was 2-5 mm thick and the zincite immediately adjacent to it did not appear corroded. Identification was by X-ray diffraction data and XES (to verify the high Cd/Zn ratio). I believe this is an old specimen judging by its patina. Otavite has not been seen by the writer.
