The stilpnomelanes at Franklin occur as late-stage minerals, occurring in shears and slip zones, and forming breccia-cements and fracture-fillings. They have not been extensively studied, but extant data and unpublished observations by this writer suggest that the Mg-dominant end-member, lennilenapeite, is by far the most abundant stilpnomelane at Franklin. If stilpnomelanes occur at Sterling Hill, they have not been studied. The locally occurring minerals of the stilpnomelane group are listed below.
The related minerals, bannisterite and ganophyllite, are both found at Franklin and are not known from Sterling Hill.
