FeAl2SiO5(OH)2
Monoclinic
Chloritoid, an iron aluminum silicate mineral, is rare at Franklin. It was described by Tony Nikischer in The Picking Table, 36, #2, p. 11 (1995), as grayish green to dark-green foliated radiating platy crystals, in a mass 2 cm wide with garnet, perhaps andradite, although almandine is very possible. It was found on the Buckwheat Dump. It was verified using X-ray diffraction and a microprobe analysis which showed Fe, Al, and Si as major elements.
