13. Lists of minerals
An extraordinarily large number of minerals are found here, more by far than
at any other place on earth, and lists of these minerals have been in existence
for many years. Such lists provide the chemically-aware person with a snapshot
of the variability of the composition of the orebodies; they are useful tools.
Lists also exist because collectors like to compile them and need a reference
list for consideration. The lists began early on, with those of Vanuxem and
Keating (1822), Robinson (1825), and Fowler (1836), and continued with those
of Dana (1868), Canfield (1889), Kemp (1893a), Hunt (1906), and Spencer et
al. (1908), among others. An historical review was given by Frondel (1972).
Modern lists began with Palache (1935) and were continued by Frondel (1972),
Kushner (1970, 1974), and Frondel and Baum (1974). A formal list has been
published in Franklin each autumn, within the brochure of the Franklin-Sterling
Gem and Mineral Show, incorporating changes which ensue from new investigations.
The above record of lists is by no means complete; a litany of that sort would
include the truly inconsequential.
During the approximately 170 years from the first to the present lists, the
science of mineralogy and the definition of species have evolved hand-in-hand
with the growth in recognition of local species. Consequently, most prior
lists contain varietal, ill-defined, and misused names. For the most part,
this was an innocent result of enthusiasm and the “urge for completeness”
common to almost all compilers. With the one exception of Manchester (1931),
most were responsible in their use of only valid names where possible.
The number of valid species reported has steadily increased. Between 1822
and 1868 it varied from 27-35; from 1889 to 1893, it varied from 46-55; in
1935 Palache reported 142; in 1972 Frondel reported about 212, and the present
number of locally found species is over 340.
The list of valid species given below is the basis for the following descriptive
sections. The geographic scope of this list is limited to the boundaries of
the formal “Franklin-Sterling Hill Area,” defined in the introduction. The
list includes the minerals from the orebodies, the proximal Franklin Marble
and country rocks, weathering occurrences, and a few post-mining minerals
found in situ.
