Jackson (1852) measured barometrically the elevation of Mine Hill (Figure 1-2) at 154 feet above the Wallkill River. The elevation of Franklin Pond (Furnace Pond) is appproximately 531 feet above sea level, so this suggests Mine Hill was approximately 685 feet above sea level. The elevation of Sterling Hill is 833 feet.
Many of the local benchmarks and elevation-markers have been obliterated over the years as an unintended consequence of road reconstructions and re-alignments and as a casual result of general development of the area. Some have survived, and those found by the author are noted below; others surely can be found. Elevations are given as above mean sea level.
U. S. Geological Survey benchmark (elevation 621.482 feet), set in concrete at the base of the World War I Memorial on Main Street in Franklin.
U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey benchmark (elevation 533.731 feet), set in concrete at the western end of the dam at the north end of Franklin Pond in Franklin.
U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey benchmark (elevation 547.056 feet), set in a concrete base at the southeast corner of the bridge over railroad lines, located on Route 631 on North Church Road near the intersection of North Church Road and Fowler Street in Franklin.
New Jersey Geodetic Control Survey benchmark, monument #1573 (elevation 556.214 feet), formally noted to be set in concrete 0.5 feet above the elevation of the pavement, on the northwesterly side of Route 23, 27.5 feet from the centerline of the road. The writer found this benchmark on the pavement side of a utility pole in front of the Four Seasons Motel, 59 Route 23, in Franklin.
Two benchmarks, for elevation only, were located; they are listed in Bulletin 17 of the Geological Survey of New Jersey (1914). These are:
1) At elevation 566.71 feet, an inscribed plus-sign symbol (+) (1.5 inches in size) in the north end of the limestone sill of the entrance of the Catholic Church built in 1902 on Church Street in Franklin.
2) At elevation 604.2 feet, the top edge and center of a marble slab set in the west face and near the southwest corner of the new Presbyterian Church in Franklin, to the right of a door, and dated AD-1914.
