The references for papers which discuss the mineralogy, geology, geochemistry, or mining history of Franklin or Sterling Hill and the nearby geological formations are given below and are followed by an asterisk (*); other entries, without suffixed asterisks, are but supporting references which do not not directly address these subjects. In addition to formal papers in the scientific literature, a number of important and informative contributions have appeared in informal journals of local or limited distribution, a few company reports, and some manuscripts. Inclusion of some of these required subjective judgments, which were made on the basis of the significance of each effort to an overall, comprehensive bibliography of original published knowledge of the deposits. All serious investigators are deeply indebted to Agnes Grametbauer (1946) for her synthesis of the literature. Public relations releases, promotional articles, truly trivial notes, and most secondary newspaper articles are largely omitted. Note carefully that the author will not provide copies of works cited in this bibliography.
For those who would prefer but a brief perusal of the literature, the following are suggested readings, by topic:
Geology:
Spencer et al. (1908)
Hague et al. (1956)
Baker and Buddington (1970)
Franklin Mine and deposit:
Kemp (1893a)
Nason (1894a)
Spencer et al. (1908)
Ries and Bowen (1922)
Frondel and Baum (1974)
Sterling Mine and deposit:
Metsger et al. (1958)
History:
Alger (1845)
Spencer et al. (1908)
Shuster (1927)
Palache (1935)
Frondel (1972)
In addition to specifically cited works, there are a number of repositories and museums which contain a great amount of information regarding these deposits. These include:
-The New Jersey Historical Society, Newark, New Jersey.
-The Sussex County Historical Society, Newton, New Jersey.
-The Franklin Mineral Museum, Franklin, New Jersey.
-The New Jersey State Archives, Trenton, New Jersey.
-The New Jersey State Library, Trenton, New Jersey.
-The Hall of Records, Newton, New Jersey.
-The Sterling Hill Mining Museum, Ogdensburg, New Jersey.
-The Sussex County Libraries, in Frankford and Franklin, New Jersey. The central library in Frankford has a special area devoted to Sussex County history and New Jersey history. The eastern branch of this library in Franklin has a special collection of mining history, compiled by Mr. Fred Stephens and cited herein as Stephens (1974).
-The Special Collections and Archives, Rutgers University Library, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey. In addition to a great collection of New Jersey historical items, this facility has a special collection of 142 boxes of the New Jersey Zinc Company records.
-The New Jersey Geological Survey, Trenton, New Jersey. As noted in the section entitled "The New Jersey Zinc Company and its miners," many mine maps have been deposited here.
-The Special Collections of the Linderman Library, Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, 18015. The records of the Zinc Institute are in this facility, but they are not specifically related to Franklin and Sterling Hill.
Two publications which consider regional history are New Jersey History (of general interest), published since 1845 by the New Jersey Historical Society, 230 Broadway, Newark, New Jersey 07104, and The North Jersey Highlander (oriented toward the old iron industry), published since 1957 by the New Jersey Highlands Historical Society, P.O. Box 248, Ringwood, NJ 07456.
The newspapers which recorded some of the early mining history are listed below; many are on microfilm in the Sussex County Library in Frankford.
The Farmer's Journal and Newton Advertiser (1796-1798)
The Sussex Independent (1871-1952)
The Wantage Recorder (1894-1937)
The Sussex Register (1814-1943); merged with the now-titled New Jersey Herald in 1943.
A common reference in this bibliography is The Picking Table, which is published by the Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society, P.O. Box 146, Franklin, NJ 07416.
