NOTE:

Most of this diary was corrected, perhaps by Charles Palache, perhaps by someone else; I decided afer a few pages that it was probably someone else.  I also decided that most of the corrections were trivial (e.g., "afternoon" for "P.M.") and that, though the spelling and punctuation of the original are uneven, they never obscure the meaning, so I have typed what I take to be Charles Palache's original version, which does, in fact, itself contain a few corrections.  Everything in () is C.P.'s, everything in [] is mine.
